Kinja'd!!!

Recently I watched !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on youtube that were, some say, basically just long car ads. I mean, read through the comments if you don’t believe me...actually don’t read through the comments. While I can’t say with certainly what their affiliation with the manufactures was a good bet says that there were concessions made for marketing purposes in order to secure vehicles like this for trips like this. And you know what?

Kinja'd!!!

Frankly I think we need more high quality content AND we need to help manufactures and marketers branch out to new and more honest marketing avenues. Not to say that all !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but I do think that manufactures reaching out to good shows and helping them show off their products in more realistic and believable way is good for the future of marketing and good for the future of content...so long as the shows retain the lions share of the creative control.

The truth is that I can’t stand being sold to, like I’m sure many of you feel, but I don’t mind a company sponsoring a more transparent and realistic, if slightly insular, experience. IF you dance the dance right, then yes I still know Im being sold to, but I don’t feel like I’m being patronized or insulted in my intelligence, and when you let your product fail or suffer I trust you more. Look, I KNOW that you always want to make your products look like they have no faults but I think that’s the part of advertising I hate the most...because we KNOW they do. Can’t you just level with me here a little?

Thoughts?

I support sponsored content on Oppo if it means we get paid.

Motor trend I find is especially bad for this.

I love EPIC Drives I really do but probably 3 out of the last 5 vids were Toyotas (can’t prove that since the latest vids are no longer on youtube for some reason). Plus dirt everyday just took the TRD Pro across Country.

Don’t get me wrong I love Toyotas and Dodges but when you go from taking a Ferrari FF across hawaii, Audi S8 across the mountains, a Fold Falcon ute across Australia,or a Bentley Continental to Area 51 to a Toyota FJ cruiser in the desert, a Tacoma in the desert, and a 4 runner across Alaska.

You can’t help but think that it is painfully obvious that toyota is sponsoring this stuff.

I make a bajillion dollars an hour on sponsored content, working from home.

I'm cool with sponsored when its clear. I hate when its sneaky, or sloppy product.placement nonsense. But cool car builds and epic roadtrips take money, who cares if they only use a certain company's brake or oil or roadtrip to their headquarters.

One of the videos on my list was EPIC drives and the other is Dirt everyday...so I know that feel. BUT is it so bad? I mean it can’t become the Toyota show but at least its good and interesting content and not just repeating the same old marketing garbage you hear over and over.

FYI the reason Motor Trend’s videos are missing is because they are going to subscription service.

In the era of torrenting and AdBlock I don’t really think it matters what we all think because either way sponsored content’s going to become more and more of a reality as advertising revenue keeps decreasing. I can’t stand blatantly apparent sponsored content and would prefer to pay a subscription fee instead of watching a thinly-disguised commercial, but as long as the creators of the content have the final say and a realistic view of the products I don’t really see a problem.

I agree the content is still WELL worth it. It doesn’t really bother me per say since everytime I watch I’m ready to go buy whatever they are driving. But it so obvious that it’s almost laughable.

On that note. The can stick their subscription where the sun don’t shine. I can wait the 30 days to watch it for free.

I use adblock but disable it for jalopnik.com and kinja.com because I don’t mind that they have to get paid. I’m not a big fan of sponsored content on things that I pay for. For example, I (used to) pay for cable TV, but they show me ads. Why am I paying for this again?

I guess that’s a bit off topic though... to bring it back in, I definitely do not like the ‘product placement’ when it’s obvious. Unless it’s too obvious...

It needs to be at least partially obvious...I think Fred pulls it of really well as its clear he’s being partially monkeyed with. As for subs? yeah I don’t like em, I would rather them deliver the good free and ask for donated support, I support a few shows that way and I think its an okay business model.

Its a fine line, I think the brave new world of advertising isn’t going to be subtle...its going to be honest. They are going to have to put their product on the line and hope for the best...or at least show me that its not infalable. Off topic? Superman sucks for this reason. Oh your product is perfect in everyway? yawn. (imo. I don’t want to start a superman “thing” here”)

Except that money is a transitive medium that symbolizes someone’s time, talent, and effort as a an arbitrarily agreed upon value.

It is the foundation of interaction between people who aren’t directly related to each other, and the basis of the study of economics.

It is just that some people screw it up and try to cheat at it.

I understand your point but I believe it is tough for a website or show to keep their journalistic integrity on products they review when they start accepting direct advertising from the product’s manufacturer. It much easier if the website or show is there just to be entertaining or update you on new products. But if the website or show does reviews, I believe the integrity of their reviews will eventually be compromised by one of their advertisers. Even if the publication swears up and down they will maintain integrity even at the cost of losing the advertising, these websites and shows are owned by large companies that need to keep making more and more profit. Very few websites and shows have a journalist at the very top.

But Motor Trend does a lot of reviews. If they are taking money on those videos doesn’t it call in to question their objectivity on reviews? (edit for grammer)
